The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at KGM hospital is a level 3 unit ready to handle emergencies and manage life threatening conditions with a priority based approach. The unit is capable of handling emergencies across various disciplines including pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology and trauma. The ICU at the KGM hospital has a total of eleven beds and five level 2 High Dependency unit (HDU) beds. The Unit is recognized by NABH entry level for Intermediate level of care in Intensive Care Medicine.

The team consists of four consultant doctors with background experience in anesthesiology, intensive care and emergency medicine. The monitoring systems include the clinical vigilance and multipara monitoring with appropriate communication systems in place to establish referral within the window period for specific and precise care. The nursing team is trained to respond in critical care settings with quick response times. The team of care providers are trained in ACLS and ATLS.

The ICU is organized in close proximity to the emergency room and the operating room. Effective triaging and initial management of patients are taken care of in the ER and further evaluation and specialized care is continued at the ICU. Patients requiring urgent surgical intervention are taken up within a reasonable time-frame owing to the good communication between the ICU and the OT teams. 

Five fully equipped ICU beds capable of handling patients requiring ventilatory support with endotracheal or tracheostomy tube. One ICU bed space allows provision of hemofiltration for patients. There are daily consultants-in-reach from various disciplines into our ICU to assist with the transfer of patients to specialist centers or to gain advise in relation to a patients clinical management plan. 

We are very involved with the local ICU network which is very active in disseminating good practice and providing support for the development of the services. Our team is involved in regular audits (including government audits), CMEs and CNEs for enabling effective care not only in the ICU but also in the wards and the OPDs.

 This unit will provide leading facilities for the management of critical care patients from across the region.
